Three creative workspaces in Leeds have been backed by senior councillors as a bid to give the creative businesses and individuals support that they desperately need. Historically, we have seen much in the way of funding for large creative institutions such as the sculpture park and city art galleries, however smaller businesses and workspaces that give access to individuals are underfunded and many have had to close.

However, yesterday’s meeting gave the go-ahead for Leeds Media Centre in Chapeltown as well as Leeds Arts Hostel and Hope Foundry in Mabgate to receive additional support and funding.

New Horizons for Small Businesses and Designers

This will enable them to start work on projects to expand and refurbish a series of unique shared workspaces which can then be used as a modern base for artists, creative firms and digital small businesses. Art is one of the defining factors of Yorkshire – and to see money given to a wider range of people involved in the industry is a great step forward. The discussion was brought up after research showed that smaller enterprises and artists were struggling to find and keep affordable accommodation for their work.

Innovation and New Ideas

Councillor Judith Blake, leader of Leeds City Council, said: “We know the creative and digital sectors in Leeds are bursting with innovation and ideas, with some incredibly imaginative businesses working on projects which will enrich the city’s economy and cultural scene immeasurably in the coming years.

“With Channel 4 relocating to our city and exciting cultural developments like Leeds 2023 becoming more and more central to life in Leeds, it’s important that we help give those companies every chance to establish themselves and fulfil their immense potential.”
