Top Tips to Beat the Heat

We’ve had some cracking weather lately, with plenty more to come over August and September. But as the thermometers rise, it’s a good idea to pay extra attention to keeping yourself and your family safe. Here’s our top tips for beating the heat!

1) Drink Plenty of Water

It’s so important to stay hydrated during hot afternoons. A number of businesses in York have signed up to a refill initiative, and most businesses across the county will offer free tap water to help keep you topped up. Make sure your friends and family are doing the same!

2) Wear Suncream

It’s something that kids hate doing, but it’s so worth it. Sunburn is not at all pleasant, and can contribute to skin cancer. Keep topped up with at least factor 15, but we would recommend factor 50 for children.

3) Enjoy a Drink, But Don’t Go Overboard

We Brits love a good beer in t’pub garden, but sometimes it’s easy to forget that the sunny weather and soaring temperatures only add to the dehydrating effect of the booze. Never drink and drive, stay away from lakes and rivers, and make sure you’re drinking plenty of water between those pints!

4) Shade is Your Friend

Topping up the tan is great and all, but again – make sure you’re not burning and dehydrating yourself too much. Take regular breaks from strong sunlight, especially between 11am and 3pm when the sun is at it’s strongest.

5) Keep An Eye on Vulnerable People and Animals

While you may be clued up as to the dangers of a hot summer, it’s definitely not the kids’ priority. Make sure that they are both aware of the dangers, and keep an eye on them. The same goes for seniors and the older generation, who may be more affected by the changes in the weather. Finally, pets have to be looked after too – plenty of water, shade and regular checks to ensure their wellbeing.

Enjoy yourselves, and stay safe!
